Forest School Sessions

Our Toddlers and Pre-school children visit our on-site Forest School regularly, often 1–2 times a week or more. Each session lasts around 1.5–2 hours.

Before every session, our practitioners complete a thorough site risk assessment to ensure the area is safe and that no changes have occurred since the previous visit.

We prioritise meeting the children’s basic needs before beginning any learning. This includes checking appropriate clothing and footwear and making sure children are not hungry—sessions usually take place after a snack or before tea if we are planning a picnic in the woods. Children are encouraged to bring and carry their own water bottles.

Once we arrive in the woods, we go through our safety routines, boundaries, and hygiene procedures. Sometimes the children begin by freely exploring the site and establishing physical and behavioural boundaries, often through games such as hide and seek, treasure hunts, or busy bees.

Child-Led Activities, Exploration and Reflection

Our Forest School sessions are child-led and tailored to the needs and interests of each group. Activities may follow a subtle theme, such as simply exploring the environment. Children enjoy collecting sticks to create obstacle courses or ground shapes, going on bug hunts, creating environmental art, building dens and shelters, lighting fires, or climbing trees.

Activities are designed to be achievable for every child, with individual progress monitored so experiences can be adjusted to support each child appropriately.

We often conclude sessions at our log seating area, encouraging children to reflect on what they enjoyed or found challenging. At other times, the children share their experiences more energetically by calling out what they discovered.

Every Forest School session is unique just like every child.
